Imdangri Kim Family‘s old house

(Important Folklore Material No. 245)

This was the place when Kim Il Jun (1863~1945) who reached Jeong 3 Pum Tongjeongdaebu as an eunuch in Josen Dynasty returned to his hometown at later years of his life. Sixteen generations of his enunch family lived in the house from a time before the Japanese invasion of 1592 for 400 years. Considering the construction method of the buildings, it is assumed that Imdangri Kim family’s old house was built in the 19th century. For the layout, the daemunchae with 5 rooms is located, facing to the southwest or the south east direction, considering the geographical features.

This house has unique which are characteristics; Saranchae is located to observe visitors to Anchae, Anchae is completed closed by buildings and walls and Anchae faces to north. As this house has more strict division of inside and outside space and layout to control access than general yangban’s houses, it is a valuable resource to study an eunnch’s house.

A picturesque pavilion in a beautiful landscape – Cheongdo

When you watch Korean movie based on Joseon Dynasty, You might be anxious to visit beautiful view point in somewhere in Korea. Today, I would like to share a great place to visit for movie goers. When I first come by this place, Samjokdae Pavilion, Every confusing feeling in my mind was settled down. So beautiful! It was breath-taking.

Samjokdae Pavilion is famous for its scenic beauty and picturesque landscape. From the forest on the cliff of unusually formed rocks, the pavilion overlooks a stream flowing down in a leisurely manner. This is a pavilion reflecting typical Korean moods and tastes. This pavilion was erected in 1519 by Kim Dae-yu (1479~1552), who returned home after resigning from his public position. He named it Samjokdae after his pen name, and educated students here. He also promoted academic exchanges and friendships with distinguished scholars such as Jo Sik, Park Ha-dam, and Ju Se-bung, and expanded his academic realm.

This pavilion has a gabled roof, with three bays at the front and two bays at the side. Its layout is in the ‘ㄱ’ shape with two rooms, a kitchen, a spring and a living room. With several renovations over time, the pavilion was transformed into the style of the late Joseon Dynasty. Nevertheless, it is said that the pavilion beside the Dongchangcheon Stream still meets all the conditions of traditional Korean pavilions.

I have a chance to visit pavilion once. Before sunset, I still vividly remember the moment of excitement. Once try to get there, No one could deny what I witnessed and got touched there. How about now? It is very close to Daegu.

Cheongdo-upseong

When you watch a Movie or Drama in home. You probably see many action scenes in Fortress. Tremendous and Brutal moment between attacker and defender makes you think many thoughts. Today, I want to let you know one of the historical fortresses in Korea.

Inside of Cheong-do uep-seong (fortress), a town wall with merits of both mountain walls and plain walls. This stone fortress existed since the Goryeo period and is located in Hwayang-eup, Central Cheong-do gun. It has a lower northern section and higher southern section.

In those days, governmental agencies and residences were built within the same boundary, and the base of fortress is still well preserved. Valuable records of the fortress have been passed down to this day and serve as a great resource in the study and research of Korean fortresses.

FYI, this is a perfect place to take a picture.

‘Eupseong (Town wall)’ is differentiated from ‘Sanseong (Mountain fortress)’. Eupseong is a fortress to defend surging enemy and at the same time an administration facility for residents. Both inside and outside of ‘Eupseong’, private houses and farmlands spread.

Cheongdo Eupseong is located at Gyochon-ri, Hwayang-eup, Cheongdo-gun. It used to locate in a traffic route running in all directions. It performed important roles as an administration facility in usual and a military facility in a crisis.

History

The original fortress is assumed its existence since the Goryeo ’Korean Dynasty’ and a combination of stone fortress and earthen ramparts. Later Lee Eunhwi, a Cheongdo governor at the time, rebuilt Cheongdo Eupseong in reinforcing stone wall for 2 years from the year 1590 in the Joseon Dynasty period.

During Japanese Invasion of Korea in 1592, the East, the West and the North Gate and many of the walls was destroyed. Once more during the time under the rule of Japanese imperialism most of Cheongdo Eupseong was demolished under Japanese command.

Only a part of the walls and the ground of this fortress remained. In January 14th of the year 1995, a part of eastern rampart was designated as ‘the 103th Gyeongsangbok-do monument’. From 2006 to now, Cheongdo-gun, a local government has been working on restoration step by step. The estimated height of this Eupseong was over 2 meters but it has been restored in lower height around 1.5 meters.

Walk along the walls

The walk along the walls was classical grace and dignity. You can enjoy natural scenery of Cheongdo.

‘Stepping on Cheongdo Eupseong’ Festival

Since 2009, in the section of 244m from the East Gate to the North Gate of Cheongdo Eupseong, people line up in a line and walk along the wall. People walk and wish to achieve country unity and health and longevity. One round of walk is for the health, two rounds of walk is for longevity and the three rounds of walk is for wish-fulfillment.

The Parking space is arranged and it is free entrance 🙂 Why don’t you go and walk at Cheongdo Eupseong in this winter?

For those who like an unusual tourist attraction, Juk-Bawi

Here is a good place having impressive history. Most of people have no idea what Juk-Bawi is. So did I. but, Once I ‘ve been this place, Every thought and expectation were wrong. It was much more gorgeous than I expected. So, I try to start sharing this story with you.

This is a great rock hill at Nokmyeong-ri, Gaknam-myeon. The slope is gentle according to the geographical features of its foothill. The rock is about 20m high, and the upper part of the rock is wide enough to accommodate hundreds of people. The rock is such a popular place that anyone who passed his or her school days in Cheongdo has a memory of enjoying a picnic on it. The top of the rock commands a fine view of the village and a wide stretch of the field. A weather-beaten pine tree at the end of the rock makes the view much finer.

The rock has a legend that it saved the lives of 10,000 residents during the Japanese Invasion called Imjin Waeran. In the mountain near, there remain traces of the construction of a stone wall against the invading Japanese, which brings the legend home to visitors. In the middle of the road from Punggak-myeon to Gaknam-myeon, the road to Daesansa (Temple) diverges, and leads 1.2 km southward to Guman Village on the right. Juk Bawi (Rock) is located across the stream running through the village, and so it can easily be found.
